This years’ Crankworx mountainbike event on our home turf in Innsbruck was one hell of a show again. The best mountainbike riders in the world came together to compete for that well coveted medal. It’s a great display of the best of the best in mountainbiking.
It started off with rather rapidly changing weather on Wednesday for the Whipoff competition. With having amazing weather all day, rain rolled in right when the contest was about to start. Luckily the wind stayed out and there was a great display nevertheless. The clouds and rain actually made the backdrop double as impressive for us photographers.
Following on Thursday there was one of the crowd favourites: Pumptrack. Riders race against each other on a track with rollers, jumps and turns. They lap both sides and who’s the fastest after that gets to go to the next round with a knockout-system. It’s a easy to understand, high pace, sensational start of the weekend. The sunset really topped it all off.
Speed & Style was on the menu for Friday. This is a spectacular mix between racing and tricks. The riders have to show the biggest tricks they can work into their run whilst maintaining the lead. Is style more important than speed or is speed more important than style? There is a clever system how big tricks will make up for the speed but you can’t be too slow. Riders fly over and under each other and are jumping beside each other at the very end of the course.
On Friday night the organization moved the Saturday highlight, Slopestyle, to 9AM because of the wind. After a full day of delays the contest got moved to Sunday afternoon for the safety of the riders. On Sunday all the riders were fresh at the start and really showed down. Unfortunately our friend Nicholi Rogatkin suffered from two bad crashes in one run and had to make the wise decision of not riding his second run. It was a intense battle between crowd favourite Emill Johannsen and Brett Rheeder. Also first time Crankworx rider David Godziek gave them a run for their money but in the end it was Rheeder who took the gold.
Hologram-Media provided the picture for all of the Crankworx Innsbruck 2019 medals this year. A picture of Nockspitze , where the event is held under, sufficed to make this medal the one you want to win. We are really proud to have been part of such an unique event!
